Some Christmas songs are sad, some are hopeful, some silly and some just packed with a sledful of joy. And then there’s Finneas’ new entry into the holiday canon, “Another Year,” which puts a unique, humorous spin on the tradition.

The song, which Finneas wrote, produced and performed, opens with the soon-to-be-classic lines: “It never snows in LA/ You’d never know it was a holiday/ I don’t believe that Jesus Christ was born to save me/ That’s an awful lot of pressure for a baby.”

The soothing piano ballad, which Finneas says was written a year ago before quarantine, paints a picture of family and friends gathered together to spread some joy, with Billie Eilish’s older bro and collaborator begging you not to spend any money on any silly presents for him.

“Just want your company/ Beside a Christmas tree, if the dog allows it,” he sings, before busting into the more traditional chorus: “Hurry home please, I don’t belong without you/ Your ice-cold feet, write all my songs about you/ I love you more and more each day/ Can’t find poetic ways to say ‘I hope it lasts another year.’”

In a statement about the track, which is his first-ever Christmas song, Finneas explained, “Had I known anything I know now about how 2020 would go, I don’t think I would have changed a word. I hope wherever this song finds you, it brings you some small dose of comfort. The horizon is bright, I think.”
