On Monday, Grammy nominations eve, the Haim sisters had an average night filled with some reality TV and lots of “tomorrow is just another day” thoughts. “I’m not f—ing with you,” says Alana, “we did not expect even one nomination let alone two, let alone one in the top four categories.”

By Tuesday (Nov. 24), as the nominations were announced — revealing that Haim’s stellar third album, Women In Music Pt. III, was up for album of the year, while single “The Steps” earned a best rock performance nod — Alana, Danielle and Este eagerly FaceTimed one another to absorb the news.

“The thing that’s really blowing our minds the most is that we’re three Jews from the valley,” says Alana, who admittedly has been slowly nursing a bottle of tequila all day. “I keep refreshing the page being like, ‘Is this really our record?’”

Danielle, who co-produced the project alongside Ariel Rechtshaid and Rostam Batmanglij, adds that she and her sisters “really put every last ounce of what we had within ourselves into this album — it was a labor of love.” Alana agrees it’s by far the most personal album Haim has ever made “because we had so much to talk about” — from post-tour depression to grief to health battles. “Obviously it’s great to be nominated for a Grammy, but really, this record was just us having therapy with ourselves.”

“Lots and lots of therapy,” adds Este.

Following the 2013 release of its debut album, Days Are Gone, Haim scored their first Grammy nomination — for best new artist — at the 57th annual ceremony among a class that included Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Brandy Clark and winner Sam Smith. The rockers’ second album, Something to Tell You, arrived in 2017, and like its first, hit the Billboard 200’s top 10. Since, they’ve performed on Saturday Night Live and most major music festivals, from Coachella to Lollapalooza.

“Even though it’s such a bummer that we can’t tour [this album], because that’s our favorite part of what being a band is, playing live, it’s been amazing to see that it’s helped our fans throughout the quarantine,” says Danielle. That being said, the sisters make it clear they definitely want to perform at the upcoming Grammys. And while Alana is ready for a pyro, lasers and fog-filled set — “we’re going to bring the rock,” she says — Danielle suggests something more raw: just them and their instruments.

“At the end of the day, we’re a rock band, we’re women, and we’ve had to go through a lot of stuff being women in this industry, and it feels good to be a rock band in the [album of the year] category,” says Alana. “Everyone that’s nominated in the rock performance category, they’re all women — and it’s about f—ing time.”

“We’ve said it before — women make the best rock music — and we’ll say it again,” adds Danielle. “And finally, it looks like people are listening.”
