The Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, have announced the date of their next show—May 16, 2021. The show was originally set for March 28, 2021, way back in 2019, but was pushed back.

It will be the Junos’ 50th anniversary. The show originated in 1970 as the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, but was rebranded the following year as the Junos. To mark the anniversary, the show will return to its original home base, Toronto, for the first time in a decade.

The 2020 show was set to be held on March 15, but the live awards show and associated events were cancelled due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The winners were finally announced on June 29 in an online event. Shawn Mendes won artist of the year. He also became the first artist in Juno Awards history to win single of the year three years running.

The 50th Juno Awards will be broadcast nationwide on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music and globally at cbcmusic.ca/junos.

No host has been announced for the 2021 show. In the past decade, the show’s hosts have included Drake, William Shatner, Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams and Sarah McLachlan.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a new Juno statuette has been created. A gold version will be awarded to Juno Award winners, a silver version to special award recipients and a gold and silver version for Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees.
