The ongoing popularity of NBC’s The Office has carried over into the audio sphere, as Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, featuring the two co-stars and friends breaking down episodes with behind-the-scenes stories, is the most-nominated podcast for the 2021 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. The full nominations were revealed on Tuesday (Dec. 8).
In addition to the top prize of podcast of the year, for which fans select the winner by voting across Twitter, Office Ladies is up for best comedy podcast, best ad read and best TV and film podcast.
Projects nominated for three awards include The Daily, with host Michael Barbaro scoring a separate nomination for best male host, and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, which seeks to defend its best comedy podcast title, with O’Brien also up for best male host. Both The Daily and O’Brien’s audio offering are up for podcast of the year.
Additional nominees for podcast of the year are Bunga Bunga, Dolly Parton’s America, Nice White Parents, Office Ladies, Reply All, Stuff You Should Know, The Breakfast Club, The Daily, The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos and Wind of Change.
Michelle Obama also scores a nomination for best female host after launching her eponymous podcast this summer.
Winners in categories other than podcast of the year will be determined by podcast-industry leaders and creatives.
In addition to competitive awards, the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards will honor Baratunde Thurston with the social impact award and Serial Productions’ Sarah Koenig and Julie Synder with Audible audio pioneer award and QCODE with the innovator award.
“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to recognize today’s most talented podcast creators for the third straight year at the 2021 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards,” iHeartPodcast Network president Conal Byrne said in a statement. “Today, Americans are consuming more podcasts than ever before, across an increasingly broad array of subjects including business, entertainment, education, news and more as a result of how COVID-19 has affected our daily lives. And although we all won’t be in the same room this year, we’ll still be able to celebrate the best of the best in the podcast medium.”
The iHeartRadio Podcast Awards are set for Jan. 21 at 9:00 p.m. local time. The virtual event will be recorded from multiple locations and stream on iHeartRadio’s YouTube and Facebook pages and broadcast on iHeartMedia radio stations nationwide and the iHeartRadio app.
