Kelly Clarkson is in the midst of divorce proceedings with with music manager Brandon Blackstock, and opened up on her show Tuesday (Dec. 1) about the moment she realized she needed to make that difficult decision.

The singer chatted with Glennon Doyle about her book Untamed, which tells the story of Doyle’s divorce from Craig Melton before she found love with soccer star Abby Wambach. Clarkson shared how much the story resonated with her, telling the author, “You write about the fallout from your divorce — I’m obviously going through one right now. It’s horrible. There are so many hard parts.”

“The hardest for me is the kids,” she continued. “I think, as women especially, we’re trained to take it all on and deal with it and you’re fine. But it’s your babies that you worry about.”

Doyle agreed, before adding, “We’ve all been trained to believe a good mother is a liar. I didn’t leave a marriage in spite of being a good mother; I left because I am a good mother.”

Clarkson, who read Doyle’s book, said that the sentiment is “what I needed to see to make a step in my life.”

“Not just for me, but for my current husband,” she continued. “I’m like, ‘This isn’t happiness, for both of us, you know? I feel both of us deserve better, and neither one of us would want this for our children.”

Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock after seven years of marriage in June. See the discussion below.
