Kelly Clarkson opened her eponymous talk show on Wednesday (Dec. 9) with an impassioned cover of Roxette’s 1990 hit “It Must Have Been Love” for Kellyoke.

“It must have been love/ But it’s over now/ It was all that I wanted/ Now I’m living without/ It must have been love/ But it’s over now/ It’s where the water flows/ It’s where the wind blows,” the superstar belted out on the power ballad, optioning up on the final chorus to showcase her gut-wrenching vocals.

Wednesday marked the first anniversary of Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson’s death. According to a statement from the group’s manager at the time, the artist died at 61 after a 17-year battle with cancer. She had been diagnosed with a “severe brain tumor” in 2002.

Coincidentally, Clarkson covered the song just days after being granted primary custody of her two children with husband Brandon Blackstock amid the couple’s ongoing divorce proceedings. (The singer filed for divorce in June after seven years of marriage to the talent manager, and has spoken candidly, if carefully, about the situation on The Kelly Clarkson Show.)

“It Must Have Been Love” follows renditions of tracks by Joan Osborne (“One of Us”) and Vertical Horizon (“Everything You Want”) as this week’s Kellyoke cover by The Voice coach. Originally released in 1987, the song became a smash, transatlantic hit for Roxette following its inclusion on the soundtrack to 1990’s Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

Peaking at the top of the Hot 100, the ballad served as the Swedish band’s third No. 1 hit, following 1989’s “The Look” and “Listen to Your Heart.” Roxette would eventually go on to record multiple variations of “It Must Have Been Love” throughout the decades, including a country version and a Spanish-language version for their 1996 compilation album Baladas En Español.
