At this point, the holiday season simply wouldn’t feel complete without a little Pentatonix music — such is the all-encompassing and wildly successful consistency of the a cappella group’s Christmas-themed releases. On Friday (Nov. 13), the best-selling five-piece returns with their sixth holiday project, We Need a Little Christmas, which was preceded by the single “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone).”
The five members of Pentatonix — Matt Sallee, Kirstin Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Kevin Olusola and Mitch Grassi — are all masters at yuletide harmonization at this point, and have their personal favorite holiday songs. Ahead of the group’s latest Christmas release, each Pentatonix member contributed two tracks to a master playlist of holiday essentials, and provided an explanation behind each choice.
Check out Pentatonix’s favorite holiday songs below, and scroll to the bottom for a playlist of all 10 tracks.
1. Vince Guarldi Trio, “Christmas Time Is Here (from A Charlie Brown Christmas)”
Matt Sallee: “This song reminds me of Home Alone 2, which is a movie I loved to watch around the holidays as a kid. It always made me want to spend time in NYC during Christmas time, which I’ve gotten to do since touring in December with PTX. It’s so special how they transform city during that time!”
2. Donny Hathaway, “This Christmas”
Matt Sallee: “I love alllll the versions of this song, but Donny Hathaway’s is so classic. It’s such a fun and festive dance-y song, and I always think of opening presents while it plays in the background.”
3. Pentatonix, “Mary, Did You Know?”
Kirstin Maldonado: “My favorite PTX Christmas song is ‘Mary Did You Know.’ The arrangement and lyrics are incredibly moving, and feel especially powerful when we all sing it together. The powerful emotions and truth of the message always shines through when we perform it.”
4. David Phelps, “O Holy Night”
Kirstin Maldonado: “David is such an incredible singer. The amount of feeling and range he demonstrates in his performances is inspiring and tear-jerking!”
5. Andy Williams, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year”
Scott Hoying: “This is, without a doubt, the first song I listen to when the Christmas season begins. Something about that specific melody and vibe fills me with ALL the nostalgia.”
6. Justin Bieber, “Mistletoe”
Scott Hoying: “Pentatonix had to learn ‘Mistletoe’ for The Sing-Off’s Christmas special, and I remember totally falling in love with the song. It’s played very frequently each Christmas in my house. We ended up singing it for a few press appearances too, because we loved performing it so much.”
7. *NSYNC, “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”
Kevin Olusola: “This song gives me the vibe that Christmas is here and I’m ready to snuggle up by the fire and have some egg nog.”
8. Stevie Wonder, “What Christmas Means To Me”
Kevin Olusola: “It’s such a joyous Stevie Wonder Christmas song! You can’t be sad when you put it on! I feel like I’m around the tree dancing in my PJs opening presents.”
9. Amy Grant, “The Night Before Christmas”
Mitch Grassi: “This was a staple in the Grassi household at Christmas time! Really gives me the warm fuzzies. When I was a child, I used to think that the children’s choir singing in the background was a literal choir of angels. How sweet is that?!”
10. TLC, “Sleigh Ride”
Mitch Grassi: “My sister and I used to dance our butts off to this song when we were kids. I love the classic 90s R&B swing to it. ‘Christmas but make it coooool!’”
