It’s going to be a holly jolly holiday season for Meghan Trainor! Not only does the singer-songwriter have a new Christmas album out called A Very Trainor Christmas, she’s also pregnant with her first child, and is due in early 2021.

In an interview with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs, the 26-year-old opens up about her pregnancy — which she announced in October — sharing how she’s feeling as she and husband Daryl Sabara await the arrival of their little boy. “My bump, sometimes is, like, humongous. And then some days, I’m like, ‘Yeah, we’re just normal,’ like today — but some days, just, like, large,” she shares. “And when I’m walking, I’m starting to wobble, and my ankles are swelling up. But it’s exciting stuff! And when he’s kicking me all night, I’m like, ‘What’s up!’”

Her sweet tooth has also kicked in during her pregnancy. “All I want is candy; it’s so bizarre. Look at this,” says the Grammy winner, pointing to the giant pink lollipop decoration behind her. “I also want a box of Gushers.”

While she may be craving sugar during her waking hours, Trainor shares that her dreams have been pretty sweet too. “I’ve been having happy dreams recently — which are great — of like, getting to smother his face with kisses and having those first days where, like, he smells so yummy,” Trainor gushes. “We’re so excited! I’m just ready for it now! I’m like, ‘C’mon, c’mon!’”

Though she and her husband are eagerly awaiting their bundle of joy’s arrival, the musician’s A Very Trainor Christmas dropped in late October. The “Nice to Meet Ya” singer tells Billboard that the holiday collection came about due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

“When quarantine hit and it was like month three, we were like, ‘OK, this is a sign. We’re gonna be here for a minute. Let’s do the album now while we’re stuck at home and not traveling,’” shares Trainor, who worked on the album with her brothers Ryan and Justin Trainor. “They recorded all of my stuff for me and wrote the songs with me.”

She also explains why her holiday album has both original songs and covers. “I want to hear something new and fresh, like a POP Christmas. At the same time, this isn’t pop. I can play this all year long,” she explains. “So that’s what we focused on with the originals.”

When it came to the covers, Trainor kept Mariah Carey in mind. “With the covers, I was like, ‘What songs do I know I’m capable of singing?’ I’m not Mariah Carey, you know? ‘Cause she’s the queen vocalist,” she shares, noting that she was also inspired by Mimi, whose 1994 hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is a major holiday staple, to do her own holiday album. “It was jokes that she’s the queen of Christmas, and I was like, ‘I just want to be princess of Christmas!’”

On the topic of icons, the singer also shares her thoughts about Kamala Harris being the first woman to be elected vice president — and her own connection to the senator from California. “It’s about time. It’s so cool. She’s such an icon,” says Trainor of Harris. “But on TikTok and Instagram … there’s this new trend which plays her walking on stage to my song ‘No.’ It’s like, [sings] ‘All my ladies listen up!’ and I was like, ‘Ahhhh!’ I don’t know who made it, but I’m so happy and honored. It’s like the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of without being part of it. We must be best friends. This is it, this is our link.”

While the country awaits Inauguration Day for President-elect Joe Biden and Harris to take office, cases of the coronavirus in the United States continues to surge. Trainor says she’s doing her best to stay safe and healthy during this time. “Especially with the baby, I’m not that quarantine girl that’s like, ‘I go out to dinner and I wear a mask,’” she shares. “No, I just don’t go.”

And for those feeling depressed about potential lockdowns and not spending the holidays this year with friends and family, Trainor has a few words of support. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise you. Things will and can get better,” she encourages. “Just hang in there and stay positive. Have a little joy in your life, and put on this Christmas album.”
