Twenty One Pilots slipped a lump of gold in the Clique’s stockings on Wednesday (Dec. 9) with the joyous original holiday jingle “Christmas Saves the Year.” The melancholy holly jolly was recorded in singer Tyler Joseph’s home studio and it mixes holiday cheer with a bit of real talk about what a rough year we’ve all had.

“Snow falls down from the gray sky/ Ashes fall from the sea/ Plans are thrown to the wayside/ Frozen days of the week,” Joseph sings on the track, which opens with a flourish of sleigh bells and swelling strings. And then comes the chorus, which, technically, goes against the CDC’s recommendations that we stay put during the COVID-19 spike, even as it spreads the love around and warms hearts with its uplifting message of hope.

“But everybody wants to make it home this year/ Even if the world is crumblin’ down/ ‘Cause everybody’s got somebody who’s got their name on a shelf/ With cheap decor and flavored cheer/ You rest assured that Christmas saves the yea,” he sings. The song dropped right after the band’s Christmas stream on Twitch on Tuesday to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
